Instruments - New developments and custom designs
In co-operation with the
Thein Brothers, Matthias Höfs has for years been further developing the existing instruments and creating new ones.
Whether in an orchestra, in an ensemble or as soloist - the trumpeter has to fulfil a great variety of requirements. So in turn, his tool should be just as versatile
to be able to realise an interpretation which lives up to the music.
During more than 20 years of co-operation and close friendship with the Thein Brothers, a variety of special and unique instruments were built. Some were specially designed for a single
work. The wooden trumpet for "Tristan und Isolde" is an example for this. Other instruments like the "Deutsche" B flat trumpet or the MH-One were designed as "all-rounders" and have during years of trials and experiments
matured to a high degree of perfection.
This was achieved not only by premium workmanship but also the knowledge about and the experience with the difficulties and special requirements on the instruments. The following pages present and describe the instruments
in detail. Matthias Höfs and the Thein Brothers make comments on the respective special features and refinements of the instruments, and they describe their typical applications and strengths. Some of the instruments are also demonstrated by a
sound sample.
Since the 4 valve instruments gain special characteristics from the 4th valve the instruments are sorted by their number of valves.
If you have never heard terms like "Kruspe metal", "Pitchfinder", and "lubrication groove" before, you will find explanations
here.
